Ethiopian and Somali leaders engage in diplomatic discussions to bolster bilateral relationships.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Thursday to meet with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, with the goal of strengthening their diplomatic ties.

The relationship between these neighboring countries strained last year when Ethiopia, a landlocked country, negotiated a lease for a stretch of coastline from Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia.

Ethiopia intended to construct a naval base and commercial port in exchange for potential recognition of Somaliland’s independence.

Mogadishu expressed strong discontent over the agreement, alleging that Addis Ababa was eroding its territorial sovereignty.

After Turkey-mediated discussions in December, both nations committed to finding a solution to enable Ethiopia’s maritime access.

President Mohamud made a reciprocal visit to Ethiopia earlier this year.

Thursday’s discussions covered a variety of bilateral matters from trade to security as both leaders strive to restore relations.

Just before the Ethiopian Prime Minister’s arrival, shelling occurred in Mogadishu, but it is uncertain if this incident was related to his visit.

Security in Somalia remains precarious due to the ongoing activities of the Islamist group al-Shabaab.
