A new proposal by the European Union aims to increase the deportation of individuals without legal rights to remain in the EU. The plan includes the establishment of “return hubs” in non-EU countries for rejected asylum seekers awaiting deportation and the creation of common immigration rules across member states.
Currently, only approximately one in five individuals ordered to leave the bloc actually do so. According to EU Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, it is necessary for individuals to understand that deportation orders mean they must leave not only the country but the entire European Union.
The plan does not involve the EU setting up the centers but instead aims to establish a legal framework that allows member states to negotiate with non-EU countries willing to take rejected asylum seekers. Currently, EU countries are limited in deporting asylum seekers to their country of origin or a country they transited through.
Critics argue that the proposal undermines the right to asylum and could lead to prolonged detentions.
