Fatoumata Maiga: Mali’s Inspirational Female Leader in the Quest for Peace

*On International Women’s Day 2025, with the theme “Accelerate Action”, the remarkable life of Fatoumata Maiga shines a light on the crucial role women play in forging peace and security in areas torn by conflict.*

Maiga, a veteran activist and the founder of the Association Defund Police Initiative to Pay, has devoted her career to curbing the spread of arms in Mali. “Without peace, there can be no lasting stability,” she asserts. “Our mission is to encourage conflict resolution through non-violent means.”

Growing up in a military family, Maiga has an intimate understanding of the horrors of war. She recalls the shock of the 2018 explosions in Gao with deep distress. “Infrastructure crumbled. Lives were reduced to rubble. It was a scene of devastation, pain, and blood.”

Such experiences drive her to enlighten women about the hazardous presence of unregulated weapons, which are often kept at home and represent significant dangers. “Women must be active agents in peacebuilding efforts,” she urges. “Many are still unaware of the perils weapons in untrained hands pose to their communities.”

In addition to creating awareness, Maiga works hand in hand with communities to demilitarize conflict zones and rally for enduring peace. She champions the belief that genuine security is only possible when women are integral to decision-making and reconstruction efforts.

Her unwavering dedication to her cause epitomizes the theme of “Accelerate Action”, showing that women are not merely victims of conflict but are indispensable to achieving peace and restoring nations shattered by violence.
