Bonnafont stated that the main focus for the presidency is to guide the council in addressing ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, Africa, and Haiti.
He emphasized that the council’s top priority is determining if upcoming discussions about a ceasefire in Ukraine will yield tangible outcomes.
“As the Security Council president, we will remain open to suggestions from members to ensure the UN plays a crucial role in steering the interactions between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia towards a positive direction.”
Throughout the month, the Security Council will convene for its quarterly open debate concerning the Middle East and the issue of Palestinian statehood. Bonnafort expressed deep concern over the current situation, emphasizing the Council’s commitment to addressing various points of contention, including the ongoing situation in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as the situations in Lebanon and Syria.
