The United Nations Mission in South Sudan is now conducting round-the-clock patrols of a displacement camp near its peacekeeping base due to escalating tensions nationwide. Thousands of individuals residing in the camp are encountering new threats as clashes emerge between forces aligned with the two main parties involved in the peace agreement. Meanwhile, political tensions in the capital are also escalating.
According to Christine Fossen, UNMISS Police Commissioner, the UNMISS is actively engaging with communities and displaced individuals to address their concerns about safety and their future. The police are currently patrolling the area and maintaining a presence to help alleviate these concerns.
Although the Revitalized Peace Agreement and ceasefire were signed in 2018, leading to an initial stabilization in the security situation, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) transitioned its protection of displacement sites to conventional camps under governmental responsibility in 2020. Unfortunately, the country now seems to be teetering on the brink of war once again.
