Indian Premier on Two-Day Mauritius Trip

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India landed in Mauritius on Tuesday for a two-day visit, where he will serve as the guest of honour at the nation’s 57th National Day festivities on Wednesday.

Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Modi’s counterpart and recently inaugurated for his third term in 2024, received him at the airport.

Scheduled talks are set to take place with the highest-ranking officials of the country.

On the schedule is the enhancement of bilateral and strategic relationships, along with discussions aimed at strengthening security and development cooperation within the Indian Ocean region.

Before the official discussions, Modi showed respect to the former Prime Minister of Mauritius, Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, by laying a floral tribute at his botanical garden.

This visit follows remarks by US President Donald Trump, expressing support for a proposed agreement between Mauritius and Britain regarding the handling of a joint US-British military base in the Chagos Islands.

Historically, India has supported Mauritius’s position in the Indian Ocean archipelago dispute.
