The unending elevation of sea levels has wreaked havoc on coastal communities, leading to the displacement of many and causing vast destruction.
For almost two weeks, Ketu South has been hit hard by continuous tidal waves, resulting in the obliteration of homes, Schools, farmlands, and critical infrastructure.
“For traders like us, a road cutoff means long, expensive detours just to reach our destinations, which significantly inflates transportation costs and affects our businesses,” says Emefa ALAGBO, who is a trader.
As homes, educational institutions, health centers, and cemeteries are reclaimed by the encroaching waters, the extent of the damage is now critical.
The upsurge of displaced families has deeply impacted the community, especially affecting women and children psychologically.
“Even if they find better places to go and attend school, their minds are troubled about their future,” notes Gideon TETTEY, Chairperson of the Salakope-Amitune electoral area. “Their concerns overshadow what the teachers are imparting to them.”
Volta Region Minister James Gunu has stated that the predicament is a matter of national security, urging for swift intervention to prevent further damage. He declared, “We are aware of the long-standing issue, but the level of destruction this time is unbearable. The government is deeply concerned.”
“Night becomes our enemy,” shares Daduga KPORDOHU, a fisherman. “We’re forced to seek refuge on the rocks every evening when the sea level rises.”
Selasi AMEDZRO, another fisherman, adds,“Being out in the open exposes us to dust, infections, and harsh elements. Especially for children, there’s a higher risk of mosquito bites, leading to potential cases of malaria.”
Affected residents are advocating for both immediate aid and permanent solutions.
Thomas AGBEKPONU, the chief fisherman of Agavedzi, asserts,“Priority should be given to constructing the sea defense wall. If the tides breach the road and enter the lagoon, the outcome will be catastrophic for us. Drivers like myself risk losing our livelihoods.”
The community is urging the government to expedite the completion of the Sea Defense Project and accelerate the Ghana Gas shelter initiative, aimed at providing relocation for affected families.
