International Women’s Day in Lagos, Nigeria, was marked by jubilant celebrations with thousands of women gathering in purple attire. Carrying banners and dancing, the women honored the day and recognized the achievements of their gender.
This year’s campaign theme, “Accelerate Action,” is aligned with the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a globally significant framework for women’s rights.
The occasion not only celebrated women’s achievements but also prompted reflection. Social worker Fabayo Temiloluwa used the day as a reminder that Nigerian women are often marginalized in politics, and need to be more involved and active.
International Women’s Day, recognized by the United Nations since 1977, has its roots in the early 20th-century Labor movements.
