Local Communities in Malawi and Zambia May Pursue Legal Action Against Elephant Relocation Plans

Rural farming communities near Malawi and Zambia’s border are considering legal action against an animal conservation group due to elephant relocation damages. The relocation, aimed to decrease elephant overpopulation, resulted in extensive damages and personal injuries. Over 260 elephants were moved to Kasungu National Park, leading to a significant human-wildlife conflict. Consequently, there were at least 12 deaths, crop destruction, and serious property damage, leaving thousands in fear. The conservation charity, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, has been contacted to address the community’s concerns.
