Nangaa, the former chairman of the Congolese electoral commission, rejects any commitments tied to the Doha agreement and continues his military progression. On Wednesday, his forces captured Walikale, a strategic town near significant gold and tin deposits.
“We have nothing left to lose. We will fight until our cause is acknowledged”, he told Reuters on Thursday.
Despite continuing the fight, Corneille Nangaa awaits the official conclusions from the Doha meeting.
Regarding a potential agreement between Kinshasa and the United States, he warned that “the Congolese people, who possess sovereignty, will obstruct this betrayal, this deception”.
As the security situation remains volatile in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Nangaa’s stance jeopardizes ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Uncertainty lingers over the enforcement of the ceasefire and the subsequent steps in the peace process.
