In a video address late Tuesday, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is in agreement with U.S. negotiators “that a ceasefire for energy infrastructure can start today.” However, he cautioned that any strikes on Ukraine’s energy facilities by Moscow would be met with “strong retaliation.”
The comments emphasize the fragile agreements that emerged from the three days of separate US-Ukrainian and U.S.-Russian talks in Riyadh. Washington announced that it has reached an agreement with the parties involved to halt attacks on energy infrastructure and ensure safe navigation for ships in the Black Sea.
These talks are part of a larger effort by the administration of President Donald Trump towards a limited, 30-day ceasefire that Moscow and Kyiv agreed to in principle last week. However, the ceasefire has not yet materialized as both sides continue to launch drone and rocket attacks against each other.
Despite Zelenskyy’s gratitude towards the U.S. for its efforts to reach an agreement on Tuesday, there are still questions surrounding some key details, and a comprehensive peace deal to put an end to the three-year war appears to be a distant prospect.
