Nigeria Kicks Off Lent with Ash Wednesday Celebrations and Prayers for Pope Francis

On Ash Wednesday, marking the start of Lent, Catholics globally joined in prayer, with a special emphasis on the well-being of Pope Francis, currently under medical care for health issues. Among them, the congregation at St. Francis Catholic Church in Lagos, Nigeria, gathered to offer prayers during this significant period.

Father Boniface Ugwo, the church’s priest, called upon the believers to pray for the Pope, highlighting that this Lent presents a unique opportunity to support their leader in spirit. During the Ash Wednesday service, Catholics traditionally receive ashes in the form of a cross on their foreheads. This solemn act serves as a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life.

Father Ugwo, during his sermon, pointed out how the Pope’s recent hospital visit underscores the universal vulnerability shared by all humans. At 88 years old, Pope Francis has been battling several health issues, particularly respiratory difficulties. This concern has garnered a significant outpouring of support from Catholic communities worldwide.

According to the latest update from the Vatican, the Pope had a peaceful night’s rest and woke up shortly after 8 a.m. Although currently stable, his condition remains delicate, indicating that his recovery is not without potential risks. For improved respiration, the Pope has resumed receiving oxygen via a nasal tube during the day, alternating with a ventilation mask at night, under the guidance of his medical team.

This hospitalization, which commenced on February 14, represents the longest period of medical care during his 12-year tenure as the Pontiff.
