Sudanese Displaced Arrive in Tawila Town After Deadly Attacks
Several dozen Sudanese individuals, displaced by violence, arrived in Tawila town, North Darfur, following attacks by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group.
On Friday, the Rapid Support Forces, along with their allied militias, initiated an assault on the Zamzam and Abu Shorouk displacement camps as well as the nearby city of el-Fasher, North Darfur’s provincial capital. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 100 people, including 20 children and nine aid workers, over the course of two days.
Control of el-Fasher is currently in the hands of the military, which has been engaged in conflict with the RSF since Sudan plunged into civil war two years ago, a conflict that has taken more than 24,000 lives, according to the United Nations, though the actual figure may be considerably higher according to activists.
Further violence against the camps was experienced on Saturday, according to a UN spokesperson. This led to the displacement of approximately 2,400 individuals from the camps and el-Fasher, as reported by the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees, a local Darfur-based organization.
Hosting over 700,000 people who have fled their homes due to earlier conflicts across Darfur, the Zamzam and Abu Shouk serve as refuge for those displaced.
In late August, the Sudanese military managed to recapture Khartoum, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing war. However, the RSF continues to hold control over much of Darfur and certain other regions.
The two camps are among five locations in Sudan identified as facing famine conditions by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a global organization that monitors food security. The conflict has led to the world’s most significant humanitarian crisis, with nearly 25 million people—comprising half of Sudan’s population—struggling with severe hunger.
