RSF’s commander, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, claimed that their pullback was a tactical move and vowed to return to the city “stronger, more powerful, and victorious” in a social media post on Sunday.
This is Hemedti’s first statement since the Sudanese Armed Forces pushed the RSF from most of Khartoum last week.
Meanwhile, the army continues to solidify its recent victories by gaining control of Omduraman, the twin city of the capital, which houses two major military bases.
On Saturday, Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan declared that there would be no reconciliation with the RSF and vowed to crush the paramilitary group.
The violent conflict, which has lasted for two years, originated from disagreements over the country’s planned political transition.
The brutal fighting has destroyed much of Khartoum and displaced over 12 million civilians, both within Sudan and into neighbouring countries.
Tens of thousands of people have lost their lives, and approximately half of the population, which is around 50 million, now faces severe hunger.
The United Nations has referred to the situation as one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
