Omdurman is now under the control of Sudanese troops, enabling inhabitants to return to their residences. However, for many returnees, such as Awad Zayed, their homes are now unrecognizable, featuring bullet marks, rubble, and devastation.
Despite these adversities, daily life is slowly improving. A local inhabitant, Yousef Abdul Qader, mentioned that initially, food prices were quite high, but as the roads have reopened and supply channels have become more stable, markets are gradually becoming normal. “Daily, individuals are coming back to their dwellings, and existence is bit by bit regaining its normality,” he noted.
Additionally, charities are stepping in to provide assistance to the families returning. Gaith Abdul Qader, who manages a community kitchen, stated that recently Omdurman was almost vacant, but now, his team is providing meals to numerous individuals on a regular basis.
In the meantime, Sudan’s army is making progress against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). With advances into Greater Khartoum, military forces are aiming to regain control of vital government establishments, marking a pivotal moment in the conflict that has displaced millions and taken thousands of lives since April 2023.
