Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces have joined forces with other political and armed groups to form a “government of peace and unity,” yet the UN remains skeptical about recognizing it. This development represents another division in a nation already torn apart by nearly two years of conflict. The RSF holds significant control over Darfur and Kordofan but is clashing with the Sudanese army. The new charter promotes a secular, democratic state while allowing armed groups to operate, despite accusations of genocide against the RSF.
The Sudanese government claims that the United Arab Emirates provides military and financial assistance to the RSF, allegations deemed plausible by UN experts and US lawmakers. The UAE denies these allegations. With millions facing hunger due to the ongoing war, Sudan’s future remains uncertain as various factions vie for dominance.
