In a strategic maneuver at the United Nations, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have initiated what is known as the “snapback” mechanism, a move intended to re-instate sanctions against Iran in relation to its nuclear activities. This decision comes after a series of strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities during a recent conflict with Israel.
However, Moscow is firmly against this decision, deeming it invalid.
Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative at the UN: “The world now stands at a crossroads. It’s evident that there’s a choice between peace, diplomacy, and goodwill—or diplomacy by force. Today’s action by France, UK, and Germany exemplifies the latter… Their action lacks legal foundation, given their insufficient commitment to implementing resolution 2231.”
The snapback mechanism, established under the 2015 nuclear agreement, was devised to prevent vetoes and is set to take effect. Should it be implemented, it will halt Iranian asset flow, cease arms sales, and impede ballistic missile advancement, further complicated the already strained Iranian economy.
As Russia prepares to take the U.N. Security Council presidency in October, it has put forward a proposal to extend the resolution backing the snapback mechanism, signaling a potential disagreement with Europe.
