Seven Lives Lost to Floods in Mogadishu Overnight

<ٰp>At least seven people were killed in a devastating flood that occurred overnight in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia. The torrential rain, which lasted for around ten hours, began on Friday and led to the displacement of over two hundred families. Across the city’s several districts, nine houses were destroyed and six major roads suffered extensive damage.

<ˈp>Two of the victims were women, and hundreds more have become homeless. A local father reported to AFP that two children died in his neighborhood, and he had never witnessed rain as heavy as this in Mogadishu. Additionally, another resident mentioned that people were trapped in their homes due to the storm’s widespread devastation.

< >According to the Banadir regional administration, there have been more than 45,000 people affected by flash floods in Somalia since mid-April, as stated in a UN report. The Horn of Africa is considered one of the most vulnerable regions in the world when it comes to climate change, and extreme weather events have become more frequent and intense.

< >In 2023, more than 100 people were killed and over a million were displaced by similar flooding, which was associated with the El Niño weather pattern.
