South Sudan Welcome Back Mexican Individual Sent Away from the United States in July

A Mexican man by the name of Jesus Munoz-Gutierrez, who was deported from the United States in July, has been repatriated to Mexico by South Sudan. He was part of a group of eight people who have been in custody since their deportation.

According to the South Sudanese foreign ministry, the repatriation process was conducted in compliance with established diplomatic protocols and relevant international law, with the cooperation of the Mexican embassy in Ethiopia. The Trump administration’s policy of deporting migrants to third countries has been criticized by human rights groups for potentially violating international law and migrant rights.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that Gutierrez had a conviction for second-degree murder and a life imprisonment sentence. Other African countries like Uganda, Eswatini, and Rwanda have also received deportees from the U.S., with Eswatini taking five men with criminal backgrounds in July, and Rwanda receiving seven deportees in August. However, it is unclear whether Gutierrez and the other deportees had access to legal representation.
