Additionally, the passengers on board consisted of 45 Russians, including minors, as stated by Russian consular representatives in Hurghada.
The exact number of crew members on board remains unclear.
The Sindbad Hotel in Hurghada-owned submarine was on a routine tour to observe coral reefs when it sank approximately one kilometer (half a mile) away from the shore, having set sail around 10 a.m. Thursday.
Those who were rescued have been admitted to hospitals and are reportedly in stable condition, according to the Russian consulate.
The cause of the submarine’s sinking remains unclear.
The Sindbad Submarines company, based in Hurghada, owns the vessel, which features 44 passenger seats, two pilot seats, and a round viewing window for each passenger, as detailed on the company’s website.
In November, a tourist yacht sank in the Red Sea following warnings of turbulent waters, according to Egyptian officials. At least four lives were lost, while 33 individuals were rescued.
Tourism serves as a crucial sector of Egypt’s economy; however, many travel companies have ceased or limited their operations in the Red Sea due to the region’s conflict-related dangers.
