Sudan: Military units intensify control in Khartoum while paramilitary groups withdraw

A high-ranking Sudanese army official met with troops at the Republican Palace on Tuesday, following the military’s successful takeover of the palace from a paramilitary group.
Gen. Yasser Al-Atta, the Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, inspected the forces at the palace and informed them about the ongoing conflict.
In a significant symbolic victory for the Sudanese military, the Republican Palace, a former government seat prior to the war, was recaptured by the military on Friday.
This week, Sudan’s military further strengthened its control over the capital, reclaiming several key government buildings.
According to Brig. Gen. Nabil Abdullah, a spokesperson for the Sudanese military, troops expelled the RSF from the National Intelligence Service headquarters and Corinthia Hotel in central Khartoum as well as the Central Bank of Sudan and other government and educational buildings in the area.
Since the popular uprising that ousted long-time autocratic President Omar al-Bashir in 2019, Sudan has experienced instability.
A brief transition to democracy was disrupted in 2021 when Sudanese army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan and Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, who leads the RSF fighters, staged a military coup.
In 2023, the RSF and Sudan’s military clashed, resulting in an increase in civilian casualties.
Burhan’s forces, including Sudan’s military and allied militias, have made progress against the RSF since the beginning of the year, recapturing a major refinery and advancing in RSF positions around Khartoum.
