Sudan state television reports that military is close to taking over Sudan’s presidential palace.

According to the state Television of Sudan, the army is reportedly on the verge of capturing the Presidential Palace in Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), signaling a significant shift in the ongoing two-year conflict that threatens to split the nation.

On Wednesday evening, fierce clashes erupted near the palace, characterized by explosions and airstrikes from the army targeting central Khartoum, as per eyewitness accounts and military sources.

For nearly two years, the RSF had exerted control over much of western Sudan, as well as portions of Khartoum, but has been gradually losing ground to the advancing army in central Sudan.

The conflict originated in 2021 when two military factions seized power, halting the transition to civilian rule. The situation worsened in April 2023 due to fresh transition plans.

The war has ignited the most significant humanitarian crisis, with both the RSF and the army being accused of grave human rights abuses.

The conflict unfolded after a coup executed by two military factions in 2021 disrupted the transition to civilian governance.

Tensions escalated in April 2023 when new transition plans fueled violent confrontations.

The ongoing conflict has led to what the United Nations terms as the world’s most severe humanitarian crisis, with both the RSF and the army facing charges of serious human rights violations.
