The UN alerts of an intensifying famine in Sudan amid escalating conflict.

In a recent UN statement, the nation’s “catastrophic” circumstances in Sudan have notably intensified since the last Security Council briefing and famine is now evident in various regions.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that nearly two years of combat between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has caused significant distress and transformed parts of the nation into “a hellscape”.

“Over 12 million individuals displaced, encompassing 3.4 million who have escaped to locations beyond Sudan’s borders. More than half of the population – 24.6 million individuals-are experiencing severe hunger,” OCHA’s Director of Operations and Advocacy, Edem Wosornu, informed the Council.
