The United Nations has expressed concerns over a recent increase in anti-Muslim prejudice. According to UN Chef de Cabinet, Courtenay Rattray, acts of intolerance against Muslims range from discriminatory actions and human rights violations to violent attacks on individuals and places of worship. Rattray’s remarks were made during a General Assembly meeting to observe the International Day to Combat Islamophobia. UN Under-Secretary-General Miguel Angel Moratinos noted that many incidents of intolerance are not captured in official statistics but they harm individuals’ dignity and our shared humanity. Meanwhile, Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, Secretary General of the Muslim World League, emphasized that terrorism has no religious or ethnic basis, but rather stems from hatred and misguided beliefs. These comments coincide with the third anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s resolution establishing March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
