An image shows a capsized boat in southeastern Congo where 25 people, mostly soccer players, were killed. The accident happened on Sunday night on the Kwa River when the players were heading back from a match in Mushie city, in Maï-Ndombe province, inform authorities. Alexis Mputu, the provincial spokesman, mentions inadequate visibility as the possible cause. At least 30 people managed to survive, reports Renacle Kwatiba, the local administrator of Mushie territory. Such lethal water incidents are widespread in central Africa, attributed largely to night travels and overcrowded vessels. No concrete measures have been taken by the authorities to enforce nautical rules. Being a key transportation method for more than 100 million people, particularly in secluded localities with no or rudimentary infrastructure, Congo’s rivers have claimed several lives in recent years as people opt for boats over the limited available roadways.
