Zimbabwe mourns the loss of veteran journalist and human rights activist Geoffrey Nyarota, who passed away on Saturday due to colon cancer at the age of 74.
Nyarota gained recognition for exposing government corruption and founding the country’s most popular independent newspaper.
Before pursuing a career in journalism, Nyarota worked as a teacher, one of the few available jobs for Black individuals during white minority rule in the former Rhodesia.
In the late 1980s, Nyarota gained prominence as the editor of The Chronicle when he uncovered a car scandal involving government officials who were abusing their positions to buy vehicles from a local assembly company.
This led to an inquiry commission and the resignation of several ministers.
As a result of this exposure, Nyarota lost his job and left the country.
