An Israeli settler has shot and killed Palestinian activist and teacher Odeh Muhammad Hadalin in the village of Umm al-Khair, located in Masafer Yatta, in the occupied West Bank, as confirmed by local officials and journalists.
Hadalin was known for his activism, which included assisting with the creation of the Oscar-winning film “No Other Land.” This film documents Israeli settler and soldier attacks on the Palestinian community of Masafer Yatta.
The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Education stated that Hadalin was killed during a settler attack on the village of Umm al-Khair near Hebron. The filmmakers behind “No Other Land” confirmed the shooting and killing of the activist.
Yuval Abraham, co-director of the film, described Hadalin as a remarkable activist who aided in the filming of “No Other Land” in Masafer Yatta. Abraham also posted a video of the incident, identifying the shooter as Yinon Levi, who is sanctioned by the EU and US.
Israeli police are investigating the incident and have arrested an Israeli citizen at the scene. Additionally, four Palestinians and two foreign tourists were arrested. The involvement of the deceased in the incident is currently being verified.
The Palestinian news agency, Wafa, reported that a second Palestinian was injured in the attack and taken to the hospital.
Hadalin hailed from Masafer Yatta, a region where Palestinians have been fighting for decades to stay in their homes, which Israel has designated as a military zone.
His death coincides with the release of a report by Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem, accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. The report highlights the increasing attacks by settlers, often armed, on Palestinians in the West Bank, with the support of the Israeli government and law enforcement agencies.
About 3 million Palestinians reside in the occupied West Bank, alongside nearly half a million Israelis living in settlements, which are considered illegal under international law. Since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, Israeli soldiers and settlers have killed over 1,000 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, while more than 30 Israelis, including civilians and soldiers, have been killed during the same period.
