Al Jazeera Media Network condemns in the strongest terms the targeted assassination of its correspondents Anas Al Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqea, along with photographers Ibrahim Al Thaher and Mohamed Nofal, by the Israeli occupation forces in yet another blatant and premeditated attack on press freedom.
According to the Israeli occupation force’s admission, an intentional attack was launched against the tent where the journalists were stationed near Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza, resulting in their martyrdom. This attack comes amid the catastrophic consequences of the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza, marked by the relentless killing of civilians, forced starvation, and the destruction of entire communities. The decision to assassinate Anas Al Sharif, a brave journalist from Gaza, and his colleagues, is a desperate attempt to silence the voices shedding light on the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza.
As Al Jazeera Media Network mourns the loss of these dedicated journalists who fearlessly documented the struggles of Gaza and its people since the outbreak of war, it holds the Israeli occupation forces and government accountable for deliberately targeting and assassinating its journalists. This comes after repeated incitement and calls from multiple Israeli officials and spokespersons to target Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues.
Anas and his colleagues were among the few remaining voices within Gaza, providing the world with unfiltered reporting from the field on the devastating realities faced by its people. While international media was barred from entering, Al Jazeera journalists remained in besieged Gaza, experiencing and documenting the hunger and suffering they witnessed. Through their brave and unyielding live coverage, they have delivered harrowing eyewitness accounts of the horrors endured over 22 months of continuous bombing and destruction.
Despite losing several journalists to deliberate attacks and facing constant threats, Anas Al Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqea, and their colleagues continued their work in the Gaza Strip to ensure the world witnessed the distressing truth faced by its people.
Firmly condemning these heinous acts and the ongoing attempts by Israeli authorities to suppress the truth, Al Jazeera Media Network calls on the international community and relevant organizations to take decisive measures to halt this ongoing genocide and put an end to the deliberate targeting of journalists. Al Jazeera emphasizes that a lack of accountability and immunity for perpetrators emboldens Israel’s actions and encourages further oppression against those who bear witness to the truth.
