Al Jazeera Reporter Hossam Shabat Loses Life in Israeli Assault in Gaza | Updates on the Israel-Palestine Conflict

Hossam Shabat is one of the two media workers killed in Israeli strikes on Monday.

Two media workers, including an Al Jazeera journalist, lost their lives in separate Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip.

Hossam Shabat, a journalist for the Al Jazeera Mubasher channel, was killed in northern Gaza on Monday. His car was targeted by an Israeli strike in the eastern area of Beit Lahiya, as reported by witnesses to the network.

Mohammad Mansour, a journalist working for Palestine Today, was killed by the Israeli army earlier in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from Deir Al Balah in central Gaza, described the day as a “bloody one” in the Palestinian territory.

Azzoum mentioned Mansour’s death, stating that he was targeted in his home in Khan Younis without prior warning and was accompanied by his wife and son.

Regarding Shabat’s death, Azzoum continued, “Hossam, a 23-year-old Palestinian journalist, previously wounded in another Israeli attack, chose to continue reporting in Gaza despite the danger. The Israeli military targeted his vehicle without warning.”

Since October 2023, the Government Media Office in Gaza reports that at least 208 journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks.

The Government Media Office in Gaza “strongly condemns the targeting, killing, and assassination of Palestinian journalists by the Israeli occupation.”

It adds, “We urge the International Federation of Journalists, the Arab Journalists Union, and all journalistic organizations worldwide to condemn these systematic crimes against Palestinian journalists and media professionals in Gaza. We hold the Israeli occupation, the US administration, and countries involved in the genocide (such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and France) fully responsible for this heinous crime.”

The death toll from the Israeli bombardment across Monday in the besieged Gaza Strip is now at 51, according to medical sources.

The number of casualties is expected to increase as attacks persist in the northern and southern regions of the Palestinian territory.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that at least 50,082 Palestinians have been confirmed dead, and 113,408 have been wounded in Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza.

The Government Media Office in Gaza updated the death toll on Monday to more than 61,700, noting that thousands of Palestinians trapped under rubble are presumed dead.
