Mayor of Mexico City Clara Brugada vows to persistently combat insecurity.
Two prominent aides to the mayor of Mexico City have been killed in the most recent attack on public officials in Latin America.
Ximena Guzman, private secretary, and Jose Munoz, adviser, were fatally shot on Tuesday morning during an ambush in the central neighborhood of Moderna, according to local authorities.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada denounced the killings and affirmed her administration’s determination to press on with their “unwavering crusade against insecurity.”
“Investigating, elucidating, and ensuring accountability is our unwavering commitment,” Brugada stated at a press conference.
Mexico struggles with one of the highest murder rates worldwide, primarily due to cartel-induced violence. However, the capital city is typically safer compared to the rest of the country.
Al Jazeera’s John Holman, reporting from Mexico City, stated that there have been 50 political murders in the first quarter of the year, although these killings are relatively infrequent in the capital.
“The motivations behind this incident remain unclear. Yet, there are powerful criminal organizations in the capital competing for territory and control of profitable enterprises,” Holman said.
“Politicians cansometimes become obstructions, just as in other parts of the country.”
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s President and Brugada’s ally, offered condolences over the killings and pledged to ensure “justice is served.”
“We share our solidarity and support for the families of these two individuals who have been part of our movement for a long time,” Sheinbaum said.
“We know them, stand by their families, and will provide her [Brugada] with all the support the city needs from the Mexican government.”
In 2020, Mexico City’s security chief, Omar Garcia Harfuch, narrowly survived an ambush by gunmen, resulting in the deaths of two of his bodyguards and a civilian.
