The Pacific island of Nauru will resettle up to 354 former detainees, who have “no legal right to remain in Australia,” as part of a US$1.6bn deal with the Australian government. This move is the latest iteration of Australia’s controversial offshore detention policies under which Nauru will receive an initial payment of A$408m and an annual payment of around A$70m for resettling the individuals.
