In a recent Catalan football derby, Barcelona reasserted their dominance over Real Madrid in LaLiga with a convincing 4-1 home win against Girona. This victory extended Barcelona’s lead by three points at the top of the league, thanks in no small part to Robert Lewandowski’s two-goal performance in the second half. With these goals, the 36-year-old forward not only moved Barcelona ahead of Real Madrid but also cemented his position at the top of LaLiga’s scoring chart with 25 goals, surpassing Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe by three.
Lewandowski, unperturbed by discussions about his age, mentioned, “I work as hard as I did when I was 21 and I want to play for more seasons. At the moment I’m feeling great physically, and if you look at the numbers, they’re the same as they’ve always been.”
The game started with Barcelona in control, as Fermin Lopez and Lewandowski tested Girona’s keeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, early on. Despite a moment of confusion over a potential penalty decision that went in Girona’s favor, Barcelona’s dominance continued, with Jules Kounde’s goal wrongly ruled out for offside. Gazzaniga, however, kept Girona in the game, making several crucial saves. Just before halftime, Barca’s Yamal’s free kick found its way into the net, scoring an own goal for Girona.
After the break, Girona managed to level the score when Arnaut Danjuma scored an impressive goal against Barcelona. Nevertheless, Barcelona quickly regained their lead with Lewandowski’s acrobatic finish after a header from Lopez, and further extended their lead with a goal from substitute Ferran Torres. Yamal narrowly missed adding another goal for Barcelona, his effort hitting the crossbar.
Both teams reflected on the game, with Danjuma acknowledging Barcelona’s strength: “It’s very clear to see that when they had the ball this afternoon, it wasn’t easy for us. We knew we were up against a great team. After I scored, I thought we could take something from the game, we could pressure them a little bit more. But then they got their second, they got their third…and then it became very difficult.”
