Beirut air strike by Israel sparks worries about fragile truce | Lebanon hit by Israel in fresh assault

An Israeli air strike in the Lebanese capital Beirut killed at least four people, including a woman, and injured seven others. The attack targeted a member of Hezbollah and Iran’s Quds Force and took place during the Eid al-Fitr Muslim holiday.

The second strike on Beirut in three days has raised concerns over the collapse of the shaky ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah that took effect four months ago. The Lebanese Ministry of Health confirmed the deaths and injuries.
Israel’s military stated that they targeted Hassan Bdeir, who was assisting the Palestinian armed group Hamas in planning a terror attack. No evidence was provided. Hezbollah has yet to comment.
The strike occurred days after a previous hit on the southern suburb of Dahiyeh, known as a Hezbollah stronghold. Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun denounced the assault as a “dangerous warning” of Israel’s intentions against his country.
Aoun called for more efforts in addressing Lebanon’s friends around the world and rallying their support for the country’s sovereignty.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam also condemned the Israeli strike as a violation of UN Resolution 1701 and the ceasefire arrangement.
Rescue operations continued, with Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar reporting ongoing efforts and expressing concern for the Lebanese government. The strike was the first on Beirut since the ceasefire deal with Hezbollah in November.
The agreement, guaranteed by France and the United States, required Israeli ground troops to withdraw from southern Lebanon and mandated Hezbollah fighters to withdraw from the south, with Lebanese troops deploying there. Both sides have accused each other of violating the agreement.
