Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, accuses Supreme Court justice of acting ‘like every dictator’ after his assets and accounts are frozen.
Eduardo, a Brazilian congressman who has been active in Washington, DC, conflicted with Moraes’s decision, calling it “another arbitrary and criminal decision” in a post on X. He stated that Moraes is trying to protect himself from the consequences of his own crimes, comparing him to a dictator.
Eduardo declared that he would not be intimidated or silenced by such actions and believes this demonstrates an abuse of power, aligning with his previous allegations made in Washington and to international authorities.
CNN Brasil reported that the court decision, classified as confidential, was made on Saturday as part of an investigation into Eduardo Bolsonaro’s activities in the United States.
Justice Moraes, who is overseeing the criminal case in which Jair Bolsonaro is accused of plotting a coup following the 2022 election, stated that any violation of his court order—banning Bolsonaro from using social media and requiring him to wear an ankle bracelet—could lead to arrest. Bolsonaro and his lawyers have been summoned to explain his non-compliance with these restrictions regarding social media use.
Vera Chemim, a constitutional lawyer based in Sao Paulo, has pointed out that Bolsonaro is currently under significant restraint, with even media interviews potentially leading to a preventive arrest. “Bolsonaro is now completely silenced. Any misstep could lead to a preventive arrest,” she stated.
The situation around Bolsonaro tightened following U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s claim that Brazilian court officials, including Justice Moraes, are conducting a “political witch-hunt” against the former president. In response, the U.S. revoked travel visas for Moraes, his court allies, and their immediate family members. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula denounced this decision as “arbitrary” and “baseless,” calling foreign interference in Brazil’s judiciary “unacceptable.”
Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump considered imposing a 50 percent tariff on Brazilian goods as a way to pressure Lula into dropping the charges against Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro, known for his right-wing policies during his presidency, has denied leading an attempt to overthrow the government but acknowledged participating in meetings aimed at challenging the 2022 election results.
