A parliamentary petition has accused Elon Musk of acting against Canada’s national interest and threatening its sovereignty, prompting over 280,000 Canadians to sign a request to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke Musk’s Canadian citizenship. Launched on February 20, the petition claims that Musk’s membership in a foreign government, which is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty, and engagement in activities that go against Canada’s national interest, including using his wealth and power to influence elections, are reasons for the petition. Musk, holds South African, US, and Canadian passports, gained through his Canadian-born mother. While making his name as the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Musk has also become enmeshed in US politics as one of President Trump’s closest confidants, who has turned relations between Washington and Ottawa upside down with tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods and imports.
