China has announced its consideration of the United States’ proposal for negotiations regarding the extensive tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. According to a statement from China’s Ministry of Commerce, the US has expressed a desire to engage in discussions through various channels. However, China is currently in the process of evaluating this proposition. Earlier in the week, Chinese state media reported that the Trump administration had actively reached out. The ongoing trade conflict between the world’s two largest economies has created a de facto mutual trade embargo, leading to concerns about the impact on the global economy. The International Monetary Fund has lowered its forecast for global growth in light of this conflict, while JPMorgan Chase sees a 60 percent likelihood of a recession in the US this year. Despite the challenges, Gavekal Dragonomics’ deputy China research director, Christopher Beddor, believes that China is sincere about being open to talks provided the US is genuine in its approach. China maintains its stance on the trade dispute, emphasizing that it is prepared to fight if necessary but also open to negotiations. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, acknowledged the hurt inflicted on the Chinese economy by Trump’s tariffs and stated that Beijing is eager to talk. However, Ribeiro emphasized that such contact should not be prematurely characterized as a negotiation.
