China has released five staff members of the due diligence firm Mintz Group following nearly two years of detention, according to the United States-based company. The detentions began in March 2023 as part of a series of raids on foreign consultancy and due diligence firms operating in China. The Beijing-based Mintz Group employees, all of whom are Chinese nationals, have been released and are now able to be reunited with their families. Mintz Group was fined $1.5m by China’s National Bureau of Statistics in 2023 for conducting “foreign-related statistical investigations” without the necessary approval. In a statement, Mintz Group expressed gratitude to the Chinese authorities for the release of its former colleagues. These events follow the recent China Development Forum, which included speeches by top business leaders and Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s pledges to expand market access for foreign investors and promote international cooperation. Mintz Group specializes in conducting background checks and investigations related to fraud and workplace misconduct, with more than 280 investigators across 12 offices in 11 different countries.
