In addressing a key summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin, Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged a significant $280 million in financial aid to the member nations, evolving its role as an alternative to the Western-dominated international system. The commitment comes as Xi advocated for the member states to resist a “Cold War mentality,” underlining the increasing complexity of global security and development faced by the SCO members in today’s interlinked world.
President Xi, in his address, reflected on the achievements garnered by adhering to the “Shanghai spirit,” despite the unstable global landscape. He called for a continued commitment to this ethos, emphasizing the need to keep grounded, progress forward, and to better the organizational functions amidst worldwide turmoil and transformation.
The Chinese leader articulated the necessity for an “equal and orderly multipolar world,” pushing for the establishment of a more just and equitable global governance system. To substantiate this vision, Xi announced that China will dispense 2 billion yuan ($280 million) in aid to the SCO member states and a supplementary 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) in loans to the SCO banking consortium. Emphasizing economic growth, Xi encouraged leveraging the vast market potential within the SCO to enhance trade and investment.
Notable attendees of this two-day summit, which commenced on Sunday in Tianjin, include Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, among other international delegates. The SCO, established in 2001, initially comprised six Eurasian nations but has since expanded to include ten permanent members and sixteen dialogue and observer countries.
Analysts interpret China’s role in the summit as a strategic maneuver to establish an alternative to the United States-led global order, alongside efforts to mend its relationship with India in a geopolitical context influenced by the policies of US President Donald Trump.
