A tragic landslide, triggered by heavy rain, in Sudan’s western Darfur region has reportedly claimed over 1,000 lives, according to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), who govern the area. This devastating event entirely buried a village in the Marra Mountains as confirmed by the group in a late Monday statement. The group appealsto the United Nations and international aid agencies for support in recovering the deceased, including children.
This landslide’s aftermath comes against a backdrop of Sudan’s relentless three-year civil war, exacerbating what is considered one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with famine already affecting parts of Darfur. The SLM/A, controlling the affected Marra Mountains area, have recently intensified their efforts against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitaries to support the Sudanese military. The conflict in Darfur, especially in the besieged city of el-Fasher, has escalated since the army recaptured Khartoum from the RSF in March.
The RSF, after losing parts of central Sudan, are now pushing to consolidate their power in the west, striving to establish a rival government. Amid this chaos, the Marra Mountains area, where villagers had taken refuge from fighting, now faces a dire shortage of food and medicine.
