A Caribbean island nation is taking measures to extend its border wall and intensify its immigration control in response to increasing instability in its neighboring country. The Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader announced additional troops to reinforce security and the construction of a new section of the border wall, which currently stretches over 300km (186 miles). The Dominican Republic is also implementing legal reforms to enforce stricter penalties against those facilitating unauthorized immigration. The situation comes amid deepening chaos in neighboring Haiti, where violence has escalated, and more than 5,600 people were killed in 2024. Many Haitians have sought refuge in the Dominican Republic, leading to reports of human rights abuses in the process of stringent deportations. Abinader has emphasized the need for stronger border and immigration controls and called for international assistance.
