The United States has negotiated agreements with five African countries to accept the deportation of individuals convicted of crimes. Instead of returning these individuals to their countries of origin, they will be sent to a third country. Eswatini, previously known as Swaziland, has already taken in five non-citizens under this arrangement. Ghana, Rwanda, South Sudan, and other countries are following suit. This raises questions: What do these governments gain from these agreements? And what impact does this have on due process for those caught in between?
