US President Trump renews his commitment to obtaining Greenland, highlighting potential prosperity and security for its inhabitants.
In his recent address to the US Congress, Trump emphasized, “We will keep you safe, make you wealthy, and together, elevate Greenland to unparalleled heights.”
“The population is small, the land mass is vast, and it’s crucial for military security,” he pointed out.
Trump has been advocating for his plan to incorporate Greenland, underlining its strategic import and economic value.
Public opinion research suggests that most Greenlanders are opposed to joining the US, though a majority supports the idea of gaining independence from Denmark.
Trump had previously stated his intention to pursue the addition of Greenland to the US even before beginning his second term, despite Denmark’s insistence that the island is not up for sale.
Greenland’s geographical position and abundant mineral resources could contribute significantly to the US. Located on an essential route from Europe to North America, it is also pivotal for the US’s missile defense capabilities.
“We fully endorse your right to choose your destiny, and if you wish, we invite you into the United States of America,” Trump declared during his speech.
However, he insisted that if persuasion fails, “one way or another, we will acquire it.”
Trump’s interest in Greenland has reinvigorated local independence movements, leading to calls for speedy discussions on sovereignty with Denmark.
Nonetheless, Greenland’s governing Inuit Ataqatigiit party has declined to expedite a vote on independence following the upcoming general election, noting potential economic and social repercussions.
“The future of Greenland truly belongs to its residents,” stated Denmark’s UN Ambassador Christina Markus Lassen. “Independence is feasible, and they have the right to self-determination.”
