A man, involved in a custody dispute, who had fled with his three children was fatally shot by police after firing at them, according to authorities.

A New Zealand father, Tom Phillips, who had been on the run since December 2021 with his three children after a custody dispute with his ex-partner, was fatally shot by police. The incident occurred after a burglary in the rural town of Piopio, where police confronted him.

Phillips, who had been in hiding, fired multiple shots at the first responding officer, causing serious injuries. Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers mentioned that one of Phillips’s children was with him at the time and was not injured.

Phillips’s custody dispute over his children had been widely covered in the media, with many sightings and appeals from his family to locate him. Despite criminal charges including aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm, he had managed to evade capture. Less than two weeks before his death, authorities announced the latest sighting of Phillips, including security camera footage showing him and one of his children breaking into a rural store.

After the incident, authorities have been in contact with Phillips’s family, offering support and working to locate his two other children. The children’s mother, Cat, expressed relief for her children’s safety and looked forward to welcoming them home with love and care.
