The second seed, Carlos Alcaraz, defeated the 24-times major winner, Novak Djokovic, with clinical precision to reach the US Open final. The match, held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, was highly anticipated and packed with spectators. Alcaraz won the match with a score of 6-4 7-6(4) 6-2. Despite Djokovic winning their two most recent encounters, the 38-year-old player struggled against the younger Spaniard, showing some wear and tear.
Alcaraz, who won his fifth major title at Roland Garros this year, stated that he is working on his consistency in matches and tournaments. He aimed to maintain a high level throughout the match, which he successfully achieved. During the match, Djokovic dropped his serve and was unable to set up a single break point chance in the first set. Alcaraz capitalized on this and closed out the set with an unreturnable serve.
Djokovic fought back in the second set, converting on a break point in the second game. However, Alcaraz did not drop a set so far in New York and continued to perform well, setting up a break point after a 16-shot rally. Djokovic paused to take in the crowd’s cheers, acknowledging the Serb’s perennial appeal.
In the third set, Alcaraz secured a break point with two unreturnable serves and held on to win the match. Alcaraz expressed that playing against Djokovic, a legendary player with numerous achievements, is challenging. Djokovic acknowledged that it is frustrating to not physically keep up with younger opponents but accepted it as a natural progression with age.
In the other semifinal match, defending champion Jannik Sinner battled past 25th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime to set up a title clash with Alcaraz. Sinner and Alcaraz have a compelling rivalry, with Sinner capturing the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles this season. Sinner will face Alcaraz in the Grand Slam final on Sunday, where they will continue their rivalry with different levels of confidence.
