Former South Korean President Moon Jae-In Charged with Bribery: Political Update

Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in has been charged with bribery over allegations of appointing a former lawmaker to a state-funded nonprofit in exchange for securing a job for his ex-son-in-law at a Thai airline. According to prosecutors from Jeonju District Prosecutors’ Office, Moon appointed Lee Sang-jik to lead the SMEs and Startups Agency on the condition that Lee’s former son-in-law, Seo, was hired as an executive director at Thai Eastar Jet, which Lee controlled. Prosecutors estimate the salary and benefits for Seo totaled about 223 million won ($151,959), which they claim constituted a bribe for Moon. The Democratic Party categorically denies these charges, arguing that this logic is the result of a protracted investigation spanned over four years. Moon’s legal troubles encapsulate the broader context of past South Korean presidents who have faced legal consequences, including his successor, Yoon Suk-yeol, currently on trial for insurrection.
