Four Employees Perish in Japan After Accidentally Plunging Into a Sewer Grating

According to officials, the workers were carrying out an emergency inspection of sewage pipes when the incident occurred.

In a tragic incident in Japan, four workers have lost their lives after falling into a manhole near Tokyo while inspecting sewage pipes. Public broadcaster NHK reported this incident, citing the police.
On Saturday, in Gyoda city, Saitama Prefecture, situated north of the Japanese capital, the four men in their 50s, along with other colleagues, were inspecting a sewage pipe. This inspection was part of an emergency inspection ordered by the central government after a significant road cave-in in January.
City officials stated that the workers were conducting an emergency inspection of sewage pipes, as mandated by the central government following a major road collapse in January.
When the incident occurred, one of the workers fell into the manhole, and three other co-workers, who were attempting to save him, also fell in. According to police, the manhole was 60cm (24in) in diameter and depth of over 10 meters (33ft).
The area’s fire department also confirmed the incident to the AFP news agency. They discovered that hydrogen sulfide, a gas toxic in high concentrations, was emanating from the manhole.
However, city officials were unwilling to comment on the cause of the initial fall. A Gyoda city official stated, “The detailed circumstances leading up to the accident are still unknown, so it’s too early for us to be discussing our responsibility.”
The bodies of the four workers were retrieved and taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to local media reports. There were about 10 workers present at the inspection site, which involved cleaning the pipes of wastewater and sludge if necessary.
In May, Japanese rescuers recovered the deceased body of a 74-year-old truck driver, months after he was swallowed by a road collapse in Saitama prefecture.
