Fresh FBI Data Reveals Decline in US Crime Rates for 2024: Crime Update

A new report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) indicates a decrease in crime in the United States in 2024, a continuation of a trend towards improved public safety following a spike in murders during the COVID-19 pandemic. The report, released on Tuesday, estimates that 1,221,345 incidents of violent crime, including murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, occurred in the US in 2024, a 4.5 percent decrease from 2023. Intentional homicides also declined by 14.9 percent but remain higher than in most parts of the world. Rape offenses decreased by 5.2 percent, and reported hate crimes dropped by 1.5 percent. The data, based on reports from law enforcement agencies covering 95.6 percent of US residents, also shows a decline in property crime. Despite this, gun violence remains a significant issue, with 8,878 gun-related deaths and 261 mass shootings reported in 2025 so far. Former US President Donald Trump has emphasized public safety in his rhetoric, criticizing local policing and prosecutorial efforts and suggesting federal intervention. However, official data contradicts his claim that Washington, DC, is “totally out of control,” with violent crime and homicide rates actually decreasing in 2024.
