Muslims worldwide celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan and welcome the holiday of Eid al-Fitr with joyous festivities. The celebration typically includes congregation prayers and gatherings with family and friends, as well as the tradition of wearing new clothes. However, this year, in some communities, significant challenges and changes exist.

Palestinians in Gaza, for instance, are experiencing their second Eid al-Fitr amidst an ongoing war in the region. Israel’s military action after halting deliveries of essential supplies has led to the loss of over 50,000 lives in the enclave. Meanwhile, Syrians are rejoicing in their first Eid al-Fitr since the fall of the Assad family regime.

In Indonesia, many individuals traveled home to celebrate Eid with their loved ones, following a long-established tradition known as “mudik.” Similarly, in Malaysia, Muslims commemorate the holiday with a visit to the mosque and the seeking of forgiveness from those close to them.

The “open house” spirit is evident as friends join together to visit one another’s homes and enjoy traditional delicacies like ketupat and rendang. Children and guests also receive green packets containing money from their older Muslim counterparts.

Egyptians enjoy a festive Eid, marked by visits to family and friends, and the tradition of presenting children with cash gifts known as “eidiya.” Eid cookies covered with powdered sugar are also a customary treat.

In the United States, Muslims, forming an ethnically and racially diverse minority group, gather for Eid prayers and vibrant cultural fairs, which offer entertainment for both children and families.
