Cardinals from around the world will convene secretly to select the next pope following Pope Francis’s funeral on April 26. The vote will take place in the Sistine Chapel after May 7. Since the church has 1.4 billion members, this is a highly anticipated task. Cardinals will discuss what type of leader they are seeking in a series of meetings called congregazioni. Roberto Regoli, a professor of Catholic Church history, states that top contenders are not openly campaigning for the position. The next pope should have strong diplomacy skills, be relatively older, and represent the church globally, according to Miles Pattenden, an historian. Candidates could include those favoring a liberal or conservative approach, such as Cardinal Luis Tagle, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, Cardinal Peter Erdo, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Cardinal Michael Czerny, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Cardinal Robert Sarah, and Cardinal Angelo Scola.
