The tragic incident occurred early on a Sunday morning in Kocani, a town in the eastern part of North Macedonia. A fire engulfed the popular nightclub known as “Club Pulse,” resulting in the loss of 59 lives according to the North Macedonian interior minister. Additionally, over 100 individuals suffered injuries due to the blaze.

The fire broke out during a concert attended by approximately 1,000 young fans who had gathered to support the renowned hip-hop duo called DNK. Interior Minister Pance Toskovsi stated that the fire was most likely caused by pyrotechnic devices utilized to create light effects for the performance. Sparks from these devices ignited the easily flammable ceiling material, spreading the fire rapidly and generating thick smoke throughout the discotheque.

In response to the emergency, helicopters were dispatched to transport the wounded to hospitals in the capital city of Skopje, which is located approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) away from Kocani. A total of 27 injured individuals were admitted to the Naum Ohridski clinic in Skopje, as confirmed by a doctor at the facility named Nebojsa Nastov.

This tragic event is not the first of its kind in North Macedonia. Back in September 2021, a significant fire occurred at a COVID-19 patient unit in the northwestern town of Tetovo, claiming the lives of 14 individuals.
